A fortified, aromatized wine: bittersweet, herbal, the heart of a Manhattan.
Turin, Italy, late 18th century
Antonio Benedetto Carpano is credited with the first commercial recipe in 1786.
A base wine is fortified with neutral spirit and infused with a proprietary blend of botanicals, typically wormwood (Artemisia), gentian, citrus peel, and warming spices. Then it is sweetened.
Cherry, cola, and dried orange peel up front; a soft bitter undertow from wormwood and gentian keeps it from going cloying.
