Typical way it's made: 2 oz Scotch, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 2 dashes Angostura bitters
The bar of New York's original Waldorf Hotel mixed it in 1894 to toast the Broadway premiere of Rob Roy, Reginald De Koven's operetta about the Scottish outlaw. A Manhattan with Scotch swapped in made a natural souvenir. The show eventually closed; the drink held the stage, and it remains the standard way to make Scotch behave like rye.

The namesake's namesake was real: Rob Roy MacGregor, an eighteenth-century Highland cattleman turned outlaw, promoted into a Scottish Robin Hood by Walter Scott's novel.
