The Story

In 1806 The Balance and Columbian Repository defined the brand-new word "cocktail" as spirits, sugar, water, and bitters, which describes this drink to the letter. Decades of fancier variations followed, so by the 1880s drinkers were asking for their whiskey cocktail made the old-fashioned way. The name stuck, and the template never left.
