The benchmark stirred whiskey cocktail. Equal parts spirit, sweet vermouth, and aromatic bitters, served up.
Typical way it's made: 2 oz rye whiskey, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 2 dashes Angostura bitters
It surfaced in New York in the 1870s or early 1880s; the Manhattan Club claims it, and nobody has proved otherwise. What is certain: by 1884 bartending guides were printing it, and its marriage of rye, sweet vermouth, and aromatic bitters became the template that half the stirred canon descends from.
