The Martini's sweeter, plusher ancestor: gin and sweet vermouth rounded out with maraschino and bitters.
Typical way it's made: 1.5 oz gin, 1.5 oz sweet vermouth, 0.25 oz maraschino liqueur, 2 dashes orange bitters
Its birthplace is argued between San Francisco's Occidental Hotel, where Jerry Thomas held court, and the town of Martinez across the bay; the records are too thin to rule. What survives is the drink, in print by 1884: gin of the sweeter old style rounded with vermouth, maraschino, and bitters.

O.H. Byron's 1884 manual defined it with a shrug: "Same as Manhattan, only you substitute gin for whisky."
