Zadar's distillers made it famous: Francesco Drioli industrialized maraschino there in 1759, and Girolamo Luxardo opened his rival house in 1821.
Marasca sour cherries go through distillation rather than steeping; the result is water-clear, gently sweetened, with a bitter-almond shadow usually credited to the fruit's stones.
Sour cherry, rose, and marzipan with a dry, faintly funky finish; a little goes the distance.

Allied bombs leveled Luxardo's Zadar distillery in World War II. Giorgio Luxardo crossed the Adriatic with marasca saplings and rebuilt in Torreglia in 1946, replanting the orchard from scratch.
