Scotch and Drambuie, stirred over ice. The simplest possible scotch cocktail and a hard one to improve on.
Typical way it's made: 2 oz Scotch, 0.75 oz Drambuie
Scotch met Drambuie in 1937, reputedly at the British Industries Fair, under the forgettable name B.I.F. It cycled through aliases for decades until Rusty Nail stuck, and in the 1960s Drambuie's chairwoman Gina MacKinnon gave the name her blessing. The Rat Pack treated it as a uniform, which is most of why anyone still orders one.

Drambuie's name compresses the Scottish Gaelic 'an dram buidheach', which the company translates as 'the drink that satisfies'; the brand's tale that the recipe came down from Bonnie Prince Charlie is, historians note, better marketing than history.
