Gin and sweet vermouth given spine by a dash of fernet; Ada Coleman's signature at the Savoy.
Typical way it's made: 1.5 oz gin, 1.5 oz sweet vermouth, 2 dashes fernet
Ada Coleman ran the Savoy's American Bar from 1903 to 1925, and she built this one for actor Charles Hawtrey, who wanted a drink with some punch in it. Gin and sweet vermouth take a bracing dose of Fernet-Branca; Hawtrey drained his, declared it "the real hanky-panky," and the name stayed.
