The Negroni rebuilt from a French liquor shop: gin, Suze, and Lillet Blanc. Paler and drier, with gentian bitterness where Campari's candied edge would be.
Typical way it's made: 1 oz gin, 1 oz Suze, 1 oz Lillet Blanc, orange twist
Bordeaux, Vinexpo week, 2001: London bartender Wayne Collins wanted a Negroni for Plymouth Gin's Nick Blacknell and had only a French village's liquor shop to work with. Suze stood in for Campari, Lillet Blanc for sweet vermouth. The improvisation traveled home through Plymouth's ambassadors to New York's Pegu Club, and by the 2010s it was the template's official pale shadow.

Suze, the gentian aperitif in Campari's chair, dates to 1889 and entered art history in 1912, when Picasso built his cubist collage 'Glass and Bottle of Suze' around it.
