Florence, 1919, as the story goes: Count Camillo Negroni asked bartender Fosco Scarselli at Caffรจ Casoni to stiffen his usual Americano, and gin replaced the soda. Historians still pick at the details, but the drink's logic is airtight; equal thirds, stirred, with nothing to hide behind.

By the same account, Scarselli switched the garnish from the Americano's lemon to orange to mark it as a different drink, and the orange peel has been the signature ever since.
