It began at Gaspare Campari's Milan bar in the 1860s as the Milano-Torino: Campari from Milan, sweet vermouth from Turin. American tourists on the Grand Tour ordered it so reliably that, the story goes, the bar renamed it in their honor. The soda top keeps it light enough to drink all afternoon, which is exactly how Milan treats it.
