Orange curaçao rebuilt dry: brandy-based, bitter-peel forward, closer to the 19th-century original.
Curaçao via France
Curaçao began with the bitter laraha oranges growing on the Dutch Caribbean island; the modern dry style was reconstructed from 19th-century recipes to give bartenders something less sugary than triple sec.
Bitter and sweet orange peels macerate and distill into a brandy base, with spices and cane sugar kept restrained. The brandy gives it body the neutral-spirit versions lack.
Candied and bitter orange over vanilla, cinnamon, and light oak. Drier and more structured than triple sec, finishing genuinely bitter.
Did you know
The laraha is a Valencia orange gone feral on arid Curaçao soil: the flesh turned inedible, but the peel became far more aromatic than the original.
