Aged rum, lime, orgeat, orange curaçao. Donn Beach territory contested by Trader Vic. The drink that launched mid-century tiki.
Typical way it's made: 1 oz white rum, 1 oz dark rum, 1 oz lime juice, 0.5 oz triple sec, 0.5 oz orgeat
Victor 'Trader Vic' Bergeron mixed the first one at his Oakland restaurant in 1944 around a 17-year Jamaican rum, lime, orange curaçao, and orgeat. Tahitian friends tasted it and, as Vic told it, cried 'Maita'i roa ae': out of this world. Donn Beach claimed the drink too, and the two tiki giants argued the point for decades.
