Gin and dry vermouth, stirred with ice and strained. The most argued-about three-ingredient drink in cocktail history.
Typical way it's made: 3 oz gin, 0.5 oz dry vermouth
By most tellings it descends from the sweeter Martinez, though the paper trail frays somewhere in the 1880s. The 20th century's work was subtraction: sweet gave way to dry, vermouth retreated decade by decade toward a whisper, and the Martini hardened into the cleanest, most argued-about template in bartending.

The dry arms race is measurable. A standard 1922 spec ran two parts gin to one vermouth; by century's end 6:1 was normal and 15:1 had a name, the Montgomery.
Also known as: dry martini, gin martini
