Gin, Campari, Cointreau, and lemon: pale pink, bone dry, and strangely convincing as grapefruit juice.
Typical way it's made: 1.5 oz gin, 0.75 oz lemon juice, 0.25 oz Campari, 0.25 oz Cointreau
Paul Harrington improvised it one slow night in the early 1990s at the Townhouse in Emeryville, California, after his friend Matt Jasmin demanded something Harrington had never made before. He reworked a Pegu Club with Campari and lemon; Jasmin sipped, and announced that Harrington had just invented grapefruit juice. The misspelled name was permanent before anyone noticed.

The drink went global through print: Harrington included it in his 1998 book Cocktail, then left bartending to become an architect, his place in the canon already secured.
