Vodka and grapefruit juice, no ceremony: tart, lightly bitter, and named, the story goes, for bus-terminal lunch counters.
Typical way it's made: 2 oz vodka, 4 oz grapefruit juice
It started life as a gin drink: Harry Craddock's 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book carries a gin-and-grapefruit 'Grapefruit Cocktail' that is the Greyhound in everything but name. The name boarded later: Harper's Magazine noted in 1945 that the mix was a fixture at Post House restaurants in Greyhound bus terminals. Postwar drinkers gradually traded the gin for vodka.
