Tequila, lime, grapefruit soda, salt. Mexico's most-drunk cocktail at home, and the Margarita's more refreshing sibling.
Typical way it's made: 2 oz tequila, 2 oz grapefruit juice, 0.5 oz lime juice, sparkling water to top, salt rim optional
Mexico drinks more of these at home than any bar invention, and no one can prove who mixed the first one. Squirt, an American grapefruit soda, reached Mexico in 1955, and tequila found it quickly. The name (Spanish for dove) first appears in print in 2000, which for a drink this beloved is its own kind of mystery.
Did you know
Don Javier Delgado Corona of La Capilla, the bartender in the town of Tequila most often credited with the Paloma, denied inventing it; the drink he did invent is the Batanga, tequila, lime, and cola.
