Typical way it's made: 1.5 oz white rum, 0.75 oz dry vermouth, 0.25 oz triple sec, 1 tsp grenadine
Havana in the 1920s, when Prohibition sent thirsty Americans south: the reigning hotel-bar order was this burnished, stirred blend of white rum, dry vermouth, curaçao, and a bare tint of grenadine. Attribution usually lands on Eddie Woelke at the Jockey Club, and the name flattered the sitting president, whichever one that was.
