Gin, lemon, sugar, with a drizzle of crème de mûre. A Dick Bradsell original, stained with blackberry liqueur.
Typical way it's made: 2 oz gin, 1 oz lemon juice, 0.5 oz simple syrup, 0.5 oz crème de mûre (Chambord) drizzled over crushed ice, blackberries to garnish
Dick Bradsell wanted to make a thoroughly British drink, something that tasted like the blackberrying of his Isle of Wight childhood. At Fred's Club in Soho, in the mid-1980s, he landed on a gin sour over crushed ice with crème de mûre bleeding down through it. By his own admission the British part failed: the blackberry liqueur was French.
Did you know
Bradsell dated his own invention only to 'the mid-eighties or thereabouts'; the crème de mûre arrived at Fred's Club in a French importer's sample case, and one taste settled the recipe.
