Typical way it's made: 1.5 oz white rum, 0.75 oz blue curaçao, 2 oz pineapple juice, 1 oz coconut cream, 0.5 oz lime juice, blended with ice
In 1957 a Bols sales rep challenged Harry Yee, head bartender at Waikiki's Hilton Hawaiian Village, to find a use for blue curaçao; Yee answered with the Blue Hawaii, and the color never left the island. The Blue Hawaiian is the creamier descendant, coconut cream folded into the same electric blue until it drifts toward piña colada territory.
Did you know
Yee is also credited as the first bartender to garnish drinks with paper parasols and vanda orchids. His Blue Hawaii beat Elvis to the name; the film arrived four years later, in 1961.
