Tuscan brandy sweetened with vanilla and orange, warm and unmistakably soft.
Livorno, Tuscany, Italy, 1930s
The Tuoni and Canepa families built it in Livorno in the 1930s; American troops stationed in Tuscany after the Second World War carried the taste home, which is why it has always sold better in the United States than in Italy.
A brandy base is infused with vanilla and citrus, orange peel above all, then sweetened. It is bottled bright and pale gold with no significant aging after blending.
Vanilla cream and orange peel over soft brandy warmth, sweet but not syrupy, with a butterscotch finish.
Did you know
The name is a portmanteau of the two founding families, TUOni and CAnepa. The house has long linked the recipe to the Renaissance court of Lorenzo de' Medici, though that connection is marketing lore rather than documented history.
