A wine-based alpine amaro tasting of wild blueberries and woodsmoke.
Trentino, Italy
Named for Mount Pasubio in the Dolomites and made by Cappelletti, it belongs to the vino amaro tradition, where wine rather than neutral spirit carries the botanicals.
A wine base is infused with wild blueberries and alpine herbs and lightly fortified. The low strength is the point: a vino amaro is built to be drunk in quantity at altitude.
Blueberry and dried mountain herbs with a distinct campfire smoke underneath and a gentle, low-proof bitterness.

At around 17% it is closer to a fortified wine than to the spirit-based amari beside it on the shelf, so it can be poured long and cold without collapsing a drink.
