Maison Lillet created the Rouge in 1962 to court American drinkers who wanted their aperitif red.
Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon blended with fruit and quinquina infusions, then mellowed some months in oak.
Red berries and orange peel over soft tannin, with the house quinine bite underneath.

Between 1990 and 1993 the house quietly rebuilt Rouge on higher-quality base wines, so the aperitif you drink now is younger than its label suggests.
