Giulio Cocchi, a Tuscan pastry chef turned distiller, set up in Asti in 1891; the house says its Americano has been in production without interruption ever since.
A white wine base is fortified and bittered ('amaricato', hence the name) with gentian, cinchona bark, and citrus peel.
Stone fruit and citrus sweetness up front, then quinine and gentian tighten the finish. Brighter and more bitter than blanc vermouth.
