Donn Beach opened Don the Beachcomber in Hollywood in 1934 and built the Zombie as the house's heaviest artillery: a stack of rums over lime, grapefruit, falernum, and grenadine. He guarded his recipes by decanting ingredients into coded, unlabeled bottles, so even his own bartenders could not take the spec with them when they left.
