Typical way it's made: 1 oz dark rum, 1 oz white rum, 0.75 oz banana liqueur, 0.75 oz Chambord, 1 oz pineapple juice, 1 oz orange juice, 0.5 oz lime juice, 0.5 oz grenadine, blended with ice
The Holiday Isle Tiki Bar in Islamorada tells it plainly: in 1972 the owner challenged bar manager John 'Tiki John' Ebert to clear a storeroom of overstocked liqueur before the next shipment. Ebert blended the surplus, banana liqueur and blackberry brandy, with rum and grenadine, froze it, and named the result for the smugglers who once ran liquor through the Keys.
