Vodka, lime, ginger beer. The cocktail credited with selling vodka to mid-century America. Still served in the iconic copper mug.
Typical way it's made: 2 oz vodka, 0.75 oz lime juice, ginger beer to top
John G. Martin was stuck with Smirnoff, a vodka Americans ignored; Jack Morgan of Hollywood's Cock 'n' Bull was stuck with his house ginger beer. In 1941 the two surpluses met over lime and ice, though the bar's head bartender, Wes Price, later claimed he mixed the first one to clear out dead stock. The copper mug was marketing, and it worked.

Martin sold the drink bar to bar with one of the first Polaroid cameras: he shot each bartender holding a copper mug and a bottle of Smirnoff, then showed the photos at the next stop as proof everyone else was already serving it.
