A Moscow Mule with bourbon: sweeter, deeper, more autumnal.
Typical way it's made: 2 oz bourbon, 0.75 oz lime juice, ginger beer to top
The Moscow Mule was invented to move unsold vodka in a country that still drank whiskey; the Kentucky Mule hands the glass back to bourbon. The swap trades vodka's neutrality for vanilla and barrel char, which stand up to ginger beer's burn. Nobody claims a precise birthplace for it; it surfaced on American menus as mule variants multiplied through the 2000s revival.

In 2017 Iowa's Alcoholic Beverages Division formally advised that unlined copper mugs should not touch a drink as acidic as a mule, which is why the classic vessel now usually hides a nickel or stainless steel lining.
