Gin and lime. At its purest, just two ingredients, with sugar as the modern accommodation.
Typical way it's made: 2 oz gin, 0.75 oz lime juice, 0.5 oz simple syrup
Lime juice was the British sailor's scurvy insurance, and Lauchlan Rose patented a way to preserve it without alcohol in 1867. Somewhere between the officers' mess and the yacht club, gin joined the cordial, and the drink took its name, possibly from the small tool that bores clean holes.
