Rose petals macerated and sweetened: perfume you can pour.
Europe, 19th century onward
Rose has flavoured drinks across Persia, the Ottoman world and Europe for centuries; the bottled liqueur is a European product, and it moved from confectionery into cocktails as floral flavours came back into fashion.
Rose petals macerate in neutral spirit, sometimes with other flowers and fruit, and are sweetened. The colour ranges from clear to deep pink depending on petal and producer.
Turkish delight and rosewater over light sweetness, with a soft finish. Potent enough that a barspoon is usually the whole dose.
Did you know
The line between lovely and soapy is a few millilitres wide, which is why recipes measure rose in dashes and barspoons where they would measure other liqueurs in ounces.
Also known as: rose liqueur, rosΓ© liqueur, wild moon rose liqueur
