Shinjiro Torii opened Japan's first whisky distillery at Yamazaki in 1923 and hired Masataka Taketsuru, freshly trained in Scotland; Taketsuru later left to found rival Nikka.
Modeled on Scotch: pot-distilled malt and grain whisky, blended with precision; since 2021 the label Japanese whisky requires fermenting, distilling, three years of cask aging, and bottling all in Japan.
Pear, honey, and soft smoke in quiet balance. Mizunara oak casks add sandalwood and temple incense.
