France's oldest brandy: rustic, single-distilled, and centuries older than Cognac.
Gascony, southwest France, 14th century
A 1310 treatise by the prior Vital du Four lists the virtues of the region's aygue ardente, which makes Armagnac the earliest documented French brandy. Cognac's rise two centuries later pushed it into a quieter, more artisanal lane it has never really left.
Distilled once in a continuous alambic armagnacais to a lower proof than Cognac, which keeps more of the grape in the glass, then aged in local oak. Blanche Armagnac is bottled unaged.
Prune, dried apricot, and toffee over a rustic, slightly grippy core. Rounder and less polished than Cognac, with more of the fruit left in.
Did you know
Vintage Armagnac comes from a single year's harvest, so a bar can pour a guest their birth year. Cognac, almost always blended, rarely offers the same trick.
