Pasquale Vena, a Pisticci pastry chef, worked out the recipe in his own shop in 1894; by 1900 the family were official suppliers to the House of Savoy, whose coat of arms still sits on the bottle.
More than thirty herbs and roots, wormwood and gentian among them, macerate in alcohol before sweetening and a rest. The formula has stayed in the family.
Sweet orange and caramel over a gentle wormwood bitterness, with mint and licorice behind. One of the friendlier amari to drink neat.

Lucano is the old name for Basilicata, so the bottle is named after its region rather than the man who made it.
