Typical way it's made: 2 oz bourbon, 1 oz lemon juice, 0.75 oz simple syrup, egg white optional
Spirit, citrus, sweetener: the sour is the load-bearing wall of mixed drinks, and the whiskey version is its American face. The earliest known mention in print is an 1870 Wisconsin newspaper, by which point it already read as a standard order. The optional egg white turns the texture to silk.
Did you know
Float a little red wine on top and it becomes a New York Sour, one of the rare cases where the garnish is practically a second drink.
