Tequila, OJ, grenadine. The gradient is the point. A 1970s classic that's gentler on the palate than its reputation suggests.
Typical way it's made: 2 oz blanco tequila, 4 oz orange juice, 0.5 oz grenadine sunk to the bottom
Bartenders Bobby Lozoff and Billy Rice mixed the modern version in the early 1970s at the Trident in Sausalito: tequila, orange juice, and grenadine sinking into a dawn gradient. When the Rolling Stones opened their 1972 tour with a party at the Trident, Mick Jagger tried one; the band ordered them across America, and Jose Cuervo printed the recipe on its bottles by 1973.

The name is older than the brunch drink: the original Tequila Sunrise, served at Phoenix's Arizona Biltmore in the 1930s or 1940s, was built from tequila, crème de cassis, lime, and soda.
