Red wine warmed with spices, citrus, and a slug of brandy. Every cold-weather culture in Europe has a version and a name for it.
Typical way it's made: 1 bottle red wine, 2 oz brandy, 2 oz sugar, orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, warmed gently and never boiled
Romans drank hot spiced wine at the winter solstice: conditum paradoxum, wine boiled with honey, pepper, saffron, and dates, opens Apicius, one of the oldest surviving cookbooks. The Middle Ages sold it as hippocras, named for Hippocrates, and northern Europe never let go. Glühwein, glögg, vin chaud: one drink wearing different coats.
