Poland and Russia both claim it; the oldest surviving mention favors Poland, where 'wódka' appears in the Akta Grodzkie court records of 1405, describing medicine rather than drink.
Any fermentable base (grain, potato, grape, molasses) distilled to near-neutral purity, cut with water, and often charcoal-filtered. The EU floor is 37.5% alcohol, the US floor 40%.
