Venice's own red bitter: thirty botanicals led by juniper and rhubarb, and the original spritz.
Venice, Italy, 1920
The Pilla brothers created it in the Castello district in 1920, drawing on Venice's long history as Europe's spice port; it has passed through other owners since and is still made to the original recipe.
Around thirty botanicals, juniper berries and rhubarb root most prominent, macerate before selected ones are distilled in copper pot stills and blended back in.
Bitter orange and rhubarb over juniper and a light resinous note. Less sweet and more herbal than the better-known red bitters.
Did you know
In Venice the spritz is built on this rather than the orange bottle the rest of the world reaches for, and locals will happily tell you so.
