Peat smoke bottled: single malt from one small island off Scotland's west coast.
Isle of Islay, Scotland
Islay has made whisky for over two centuries (Laphroaig dates to 1815), and its working distilleries hit double digits when Port Ellen, closed in 1983, was revived in 2024.
Barley malts over smoldering peat, and the smoke's phenols, measured in parts per million, follow the spirit into at least three years of oak, per Scotch law.
Tar, iodine, smoked seaweed, and campfire over a sweet malt core. The smoke fades slowest.
Did you know
Peat is graded in phenol parts per million: around 10 reads gentle, 40 to 50 counts as heavy, and Islay's most extreme bottlings have pushed past 100.
Also known as: peaty scotch, peat
