Grape brandy from a single French region: twice distilled, patiently oaked.
Cognac, Charente, France
Traders shipping the Charente's thin white wines found they traveled poorly, so they distilled them; rest in French oak turned the workaround into the world's benchmark brandy.
White wine, nearly all of it ugni blanc, is distilled twice in copper pot stills, then aged at least two years in French oak. VS, VSOP, and XO certify two, four, and ten.
Dried apricot, candied orange, vanilla, and gentle rancio depth in older blends. Silk where whisky is tweed.
