Part of the wave of American flavoured schnapps that filled back bars from the 1980s, built for shots and sweet mixed drinks rather than for a stirred glass.
Butterscotch flavouring (brown sugar, butter and vanilla notes) is blended into a lightly sweetened neutral spirit at low proof. There is no distillation of anything butterscotch about it.

It shares a name but nothing else with German Schnaps, which is a dry, unsweetened fruit distillate. The American sense of the word means almost the opposite.
