Liquid honey with a spirit backbone, poured from a bottle shaped like a beehive.
East Prussia; produced in Germany
The style descends from Bärenfang, an old East Prussian honey liqueur made at home long before anyone bottled it commercially; the branded version has been distributed internationally since the mid-20th century.
Honey is blended with neutral grain spirit and little else. There is no aging and no botanical load to speak of, which leaves the honey itself doing all the work.
Thick, floral honey with beeswax and a warm spirit lift underneath. Sweet enough to want lemon, sturdy enough to carry a hot toddy.
Did you know
The name means "bear hunter"; the story goes that hunters in the old East Prussian forests used honey to bait bears, and the liqueur took its name from the practice.
