Lime, sugar, mint, soda. The Mojito, sober. Better than it has any right to be when made with care.
Typical way it's made: 1 oz lime juice, 0.75 oz simple syrup, 8-10 mint leaves, club soda to top
The mojito's roots reach back to El Draque, the 16th-century Havana remedy of cane spirit, lime, mint, and sugar that folklore names for the privateer Francis Drake. Remove the rum and three of the four pillars still stand. The Nojito keeps the muddled mint, the fresh lime, and the soda lift, and asks nothing of tomorrow morning.
Did you know
The rum version only picked up the name mojito during Havana's 1930s bar boom; La Bodeguita del Medio claims the invention outright, a claim cocktail historians dispute.
Also known as: virgin mojito
