Rum, lime, sugar, mint, soda. Cuban-born, eternally popular, easy to make badly and hard to make great.
Typical way it's made: 2 oz white rum, 1 oz lime juice, 0.75 oz simple syrup, 8 to 10 mint leaves gently muddled, club soda to top
Havana folklore starts it with El Draque, a 16th-century medicinal mix of raw cane spirit, lime, mint, and sugar named for the English privateer Francis Drake. Refined rum eventually replaced the firewater, soda lengthened it, and by the early 20th century it was a Havana standard. No one owns it; La Bodeguita del Medio simply claims it loudest.

The famous line on La Bodeguita's wall, 'My mojito in La Bodeguita, my daiquiri in El Floridita', is signed Hemingway; drinks historians widely doubt he wrote it.
Also known as: cuban mojito
