Typical way it's made: 2.5 oz bourbon, 8-10 mint leaves, 2 tsp sugar
The word julep reaches back through Arabic to the Persian golab, rosewater, and the American South was icing spirits with mint by the 1790s, rum and brandy before bourbon claimed the cup. Kentucky senator Henry Clay is credited with introducing Washington to the drink at the Willard Hotel's Round Robin Bar.
