Typical way it's made: 2 oz gin, tonic water to top, lime wedge
British officers and colonials in nineteenth-century India took quinine against malaria and hated every bitter dose, so they softened it with sugar, soda water, and gin. Erasmus Bond patented the first commercial tonic water in London in 1858, and the medicine outlived its job: today's tonic carries a fraction of the old quinine dose, kept for flavor.

Quinine fluoresces under ultraviolet light, so a gin and tonic glows pale blue under a blacklight; the effect is reliable enough that science classes use tonic water to demonstrate UV.
