The Alexander began as a gin drink, in print by the 1910s, and the brandy version muscled in over the following decades until it owned the name outright. Nobody can prove who mixed the first one; stories mention a 1922 London society wedding without evidence. What it certainly became is the dessert cocktail the others get measured against, nutmeg included.
