Calabria's amaro: thirty-odd botanicals, drunk straight from the freezer.
Limbadi, Calabria, Italy
The Caffo family took over the Limbadi distillery in 1915 and built the amaro around local Calabrian botanicals; it is now among Italy's best-selling amari.
Around thirty herbs, roots, flowers and fruits from Calabria, liquorice, juniper, bitter orange, camomile and mandarin among them, infuse in neutral spirit before sweetening.
Sweeter and more citrus-forward than the alpine amari, with liquorice, orange and camomile over a gentle bitterness that never turns sharp.
Did you know
It is meant to be served near-frozen, straight from the freezer at around minus 20 Celsius, which thickens the texture and mutes the sweetness.
Also known as: vecchio del capo, amaro del capo
