Bolivia's national spirit: muscat brandy distilled in the high Andes.
Bolivian Andes, 16th century
Spanish colonists planted muscat vines in Bolivia's high valleys in the 16th century; the brandy took its name, the story goes, from a village called Singani near the early missions.
By Bolivian rule, Muscat of Alexandria grapes grown at 1,600 meters or higher are made into wine and distilled; the high valleys around Tarija do most of it, and the spirit is bottled clear and unaged.
Muscat in full voice: white flowers, grape skin, orange blossom, a trace of anise, silky for something so clear. At home it stretches into the Chuflay: singani, ginger ale, lime.
Did you know
Filmmaker Steven Soderbergh got hooked on singani during a film project, imported it himself, and lobbied US regulators for years; in January 2023 the TTB gave singani its own official class of brandy.
