Caraway, cumin and fennel in a clear sweet spirit; the golf clubhouse drink.
The Low Countries, 16th century
Dutch distillers were making caraway spirits by the 1500s; the style travelled east, and by the 19th century Berlin and Riga were its capitals, with Gilka bottling in Berlin from the 1830s.
Caraway seed leads, with cumin and fennel behind it, distilled or macerated into a neutral base and sweetened. It is bottled clear, sometimes with visible crystallized sugar.
Caraway and rye-bread spice over sweet, clean spirit, finishing with a cooling fennel note. Served ice-cold or neat after dinner.

British golf clubhouses adopted it so thoroughly that it picked up the nickname "putting mixture", on the theory that a glass steadies the nerves over a short putt.
